Are you a farmer who’s considering expanding your farm operation? You know you can handle more livestock, but you’re not sure how to manage employees? Do you already have employees and are looking for some additional human resource management training?
University of Wisconsin-Extension has partnered with UW-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course to offer a course that will help you better manage one of the most important resources on your farm – your employees and co-workers.
Practical Considerations in Human Resource Management will be offered Jan. 5-7 at UW-Madison. Topics include:
- Communicating with employees.
- Developing a human resource management philosophy.
- Finding and retaining that perfect employee.
- Legal considerations.
Gregg Hadley, UW-Extension Farm Financial Management Specialist, will teach the course. Hadley has extensive industry experience in dairy farm and agribusiness management. He works with Cooperative Extension and the Center for Dairy Profitability to serve and support programming efforts in managerial finance, operations management, decision-making, human resource management and strategic management for farms and agribusinesses. Hadley has expertise on the management and economic implications of dairy farm expansion and culling.
“Figuring out what type of manager you are and what type of employees to hire is key to expanding a farm operation,” Hadley said. “By recognizing your management style you are better able to find and hire employees that will in the long term help you run a profitable farm operation.”

Although the registration deadline on the brochure is listed as December 17. Those wishing to register for the Human Resource Management session have an extended deadline of Dec. 27.
