One segment of the dairy industry that escaped the recession last year was ice cream.

“Sales of ice cream and other frozen desserts went against the grain last year, rising 1.5 percent nationally to $25 billion,” reports the Fresno Bee, quoting numbers from the New York-based market research firm Packaged Facts.  

One reason: In tough times, people turn to comfort foods and ice cream is the ultimate comfort food.
