The governor of Indiana wants to grow the state’s economy by encouraging expansion within the livestock industry.

Gov. Mitch Daniels told the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette that he wants “to double hog production by adapting breakthrough technologies in environmental and animal welfare management.”

That has the Indiana State Department of Agriculture requesting more money to test technologies that reduce odor and waste, as well as create a Livestock Venture Fund to help fund growth by livestock operations.

While opponents agree that growing the economy is good, they argue that doing so with large livestock operations creates problems – specifically lots of manure.
