The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is raising the penalty livestock producers pay for filing their annual manure management plans late.

Producers who file their plan more than 6 weeks after the deadline will face penalties of up to $3,000. The change in policy comes at the request of producer groups and consultants.

The new policy allows DNR to reward the majority of producers who comply with the rules, and use stiffer penalties to encourage others who are not.
