A large manure spill in northern New York has led the city of Watertown to shut off its water intake from the Black River. The city was planning to use from its 60 million gallon reserve water supply until the spill passes.

Last week, an estimated three million gallons of liquid manure spilled from a lagoon after a wall “blew out.” From the dairy, it flowed into a drainage ditch and then into the Black River which flows into LakeOntario.

As of Friday no charges had been filed in the matter. The dairy is located about 5 miles south of Lowville, N.Y.

The spill is expected to reach LakeOntario later this week.
