Hundreds of people showed up Thursday night to express their opinions about a proposed 8,000-cow farm in east central Wisconsin.

"This is our future. We need to double food production in this country in the next 40 years," said Jim Ostrom, owner of Rosendale Dairy, which is wanting to double its size from 4,000 to 8,000 cows.

Yet, there were opponents on hand at the public hearing. Some came dressed as cows, according to to WBAY-TV in Green Bay, Wis.

"I consider this a rape of the land, and I think it's going to be devastating," Elaine Swanson of Pickett, Wis., was quoted as saying.

The state Department of Natural Resources plans to make a final decision on the permit in January.
