Vermont agriculture officials met earlier this week to discuss the current dairy crisis and possible solutions.

One proposal under discussion is for the Vermont Milk Commission to impose a fee on milk processors when buying milk from Vermont dairy farms, reports the Burlington Free Press. The money would be used to create an emergency fund to help local dairy farmers in years of low milk prices.

Details of how this plan would work are still in development.

Processors are skeptical of how the fee would work; they believe neighboring states would also have to adapt such a fee for the plan to work.
