Tempered gains continue to hold milk production in check. In June, the 23-state dairy herd produced 14.2 billion pounds of milk. According to the USDA’s July 18 “Milk Production” report, that is a gain of 1.2 percent versus a year ago.

In June, milk output per cow in the top 23 states was up 0.9 percent, or 16 pounds, on a year-over-year basis. Milk per cow averaged 1,713 pounds for the month, or about 57 pounds per cow per day. The table shows milk per cow in each of the top 23 states in June.

The 23-state cow herd increased just 0.2 percent versus a year ago. That puts cow numbers 19,000 head ahead of last June. As a result, the 23-state herd stands at 8.29 million head. Cow numbers are also up 2,000 head on a month-to-month basis in the top 23 states.

Second quarter milk production was up 1.1 percent versus the same time period last year. U.S. milk production totaled 47.4 billion pounds during that time. The average number of cows in the U.S. dairy herd was 9.13 million head during the quarter. That’s 2,000 fewer cows than the same period last year.
