National Dairy Council® (NDC), the nutrition research and education arm of the dairy checkoff program, will join more than 600 Action For Healthy Kids (AFHK) volunteers and representatives of government, education, health and business groups at the 2005 Healthy Schools Summit in Washington, DC, Sept. 27 - 28.

AFHK is the only nonprofit organization addressing the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes in schools. Dairy producers — through their national checkoff investment — support AFHK and are working to introduce kids to the benefits of exercise and nutritious foods including dairy.

“The dairy industry is proud to take an active role in addressing childhood obesity and wellness issues,” said Paul Rovey, an Arizona dairy producer and chairman of Dairy Management Inc.™ (DMI), which manages the national checkoff. “We know that what’s good for kids and kids’ nutrition can be good for dairy.”

First Lady Laura Bush will serve as the honorary chairperson. Keynote speakers will include:  Surgeon General Vice Admiral Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S.; former Surgeon General David Satcher, founding chair of AFHK; and CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
