Last year, the number of licensed dairy operations in the United States dropped 5 percent from the previous year.
According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, total operations — both Grade A and Grade B producers — averaged 70,410 in 2003, or 3,700 fewer than 2002. California and New Mexico were the only states that gained licensed dairies. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, New York and Kentucky were among the states showing the biggest declines.
