A bill that attempts to halt the United States' obesity problem passed through a Senate committee last week. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee passed the bill called the Improved Nutrition and Physical Activity Act, by unanimous vote. It would encourage people to exercise and eat well. The legislation also would give grants to students in health-based professions to conduct research in eating disorders and obesity.

The bill now heads to the full Senate. Rep. Mary Bono, R-Calif., introduced a similar bill on the House side; it has 61 cosponsors.
