Manure is not the only source of well contamination in the town of Morrison, Wis. And the solution to the problem is not expected to appear over night.

So far, 76 wells have tested positive for bacterial contamination.

Brown County officials say that land in the area is over capacity for spreading because septic, municipal and industrial waste is also spread there. The town’s area has 14,533 acres of cropland, but not all of it is suitable for spreading. In addition, officials say that some of the contamination may be from older septic systems that leak material directly to the bedrock.

Meanwhile, officials have begun inspecting manure storage facilities and are evaluating land use activities, especially those within a mile of a contaminated well.
