The board of directors of the Professional Dairy Heifer Growers Association (PDHGA) voted at their annual board meeting to change the organization’s name to the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association. The name change was announced yesterday at the 2007 Dairy Calf and Heifer Conference in Burlington, Vt. About 420 dairy producers, calf and heifer raisers and allied industry personnel attended the conference.

“Many people in the dairy industry have perceived that our organization is an exclusive group for contract heifer growers,” says Steve Bechard, the association’s president from West Chazy, N.Y.  “Our mission is to assist the dairy industry in raising high-quality dairy replacements. That includes everyone who raises dairy calves and heifers, whether they are contract growers or dairy producers who raise their own replacements.”

In addition, he says the technology and processes related to raising heifers calves also apply to producers who raise dairy beef calves. The organization’s new name will make the group more inclusive to all dairy calf and heifer raisers.

“We have been, and will continue to be, about raising healthy, productive dairy calves and heifers,” he says. “Calves represent the future of every dairy enterprise, and it remains our goal to assist the entire industry in recognizing that fact, and in doing the best job possible at raising them.

The organization’s next annual meeting and conference is set for April 1-4, 2008 in Rochester, Minn.
