Last week marked the start of a racial discrimination trial that has California Dairies, Inc., defending its labor-management practices in Fresno County Superior Court.

Several African-American employees at a plant in Fresno contend that they have been subject to discrimination based on race, harassment, racial slurs, denied promotions and overtime pay because of the color of their skin. They are seeking millions of dollars in damages.

California Dairies, the state’s largest cooperative with plants in Fresno, Visalia, Los Banos, Tipton, Turlock, denies the allegations. The trial is expected to last up to 12 weeks.
