Regional dairy brand being considered

AgriMark is thinking about creating a New England brand of milk to bring dairy producers there a premium for the milk they produce.

New England’s largest dairy cooperative is looking for ways to help keep dairy producers there in business. AgriMark is considering developing a New England brand of milk that would help put more money in local dairy producers’ pockets.

According to Robert Wellington, AgriMark’s senior vice president and economist, the special marketing program would add about 25 cents to 30 cents to the cost of a gallon of milk for consumers. However, that would translate into about $1 per 100 pounds of milk more for dairy producers.

Wellington’s comments were made as part of a panel discussion at the Strolling of the Heifers celebration in Brattleboro, Vt.
