Dairy-cow slaughter has slowed now that milk prices are beginning to recover.

In December, 231,000 dairy cows went to slaughter, according to the USDA, which was up only slightly – 2,000 head – from the same month a year earlier. Last July, slaughter levels were up 75,000 head on a year-over-year basis.

December’s slaughter levels were 22,000 higher than November.
