SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The New Mexico Environmental Department is investigating soil and groundwater pollution at two dairies in the state.

The department's Ground Water Quality Bureau has required the Elmira Dairy in southwest Albuquerque and the Othart Dairy No. 1 east of Veguita in Socorro County to submit plans to address the problems.

In announcing the investigations on Dec. 22, the New Mexico Environment Department also had this to say: "Monitoring data available to the department shows that more than 65 percent of dairies in the state have groundwater contamination associated with their facilities."
