Stinky cheese is back

Liederkranz cheese hasn’t been produced in the U.S. for about 25 years, but this cousin of Limburger is making an odorous return.

DCI Cheese Co. of Richfield, Wis., bought the cheese division of ConAgra a few years ago, and the Liederkranz recipe came with it. Company executives hope the full-bodied cheese with a distinctive aroma will have a future that honors its past, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The cheese became available in several Milwaukee, Wis.-area stores late last week after making a much-anticipated debut at the recent World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison, Wis.
