The Tennessee legislature has taken the next step to help the state’s dairy producers develop their own brand of milk. Today, the state Senate unanimously passed a bill to establish a category of milk called “Tennessee Prime Milk” of which 80 percent has to be produced in Tennessee.
The companion bill passed the state’s House last year; now the two chambers must agree on the bills’ provisions before the legislation heads to the governor for final approval.
The objective of the measure is to offer the state’s dairy producers a niche to compete with organic milk production, say supporters.
