A confirmatory test on a four-year-old dairy cow for bovine spongiform encephalopathy came back positive for BSE last week.

Given the animal’s age, it would have been exposed to BSE after the implementation of Canada’s feed ban in 1997. However, Canadian officials say this scenario “is consistent with the experiences of most countries reporting cases of BSE.”

Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns has dispatched an expert from USDA to participate in the investigation.
