According to the 2002 Dairy Industry Study conducted by the National Animal Health Monitoring Service, 26.9 percent of all cows culled from the dairies leave due to mastitis or other udder health problems.

Other top reasons for culling included: reproductive problems, 26.5 percent; poor milk production, 19.3 percent; and lameness or injury, 16.3 percent.
