In the West, hot weather in the Southwest contrasts with a lingering chill across the northern half of the region. However, dry weather throughout the West favors fieldwork, including winter wheat harvesting in California.

On the Plains, cool weather across the northern half of the region contrasts with hot conditions farther south. Strong thunderstorms continue to develop on the central Plains, near the boundary between cool and hot air. The winter wheat harvest is advancing on the southern Plains, as conditions permit.

In the Corn Belt, showers and locally severe thunderstorms are slowing late-season planting activities but maintaining abundant moisture reserves for corn and soybeans. Some of the heaviest thunderstorms are sweeping across parts of Iowa and Missouri.

In the South, heavy rain is developing along and near the Texas coast. Elsewhere, hot, mostly dry weather continues to promote summer crop development and winter wheat maturation and harvesting. However, rain is needed in an area from eastern Texas to the Delta to prevent further drought expansion.

Outlook: A new surge of cool air will arrive in the Northwest on Wednesday and overspread the remainder of the western U.S. by week’s end. During the weekend, cooler conditions will arrive across the Plains and the upper Midwest, while heat will expand across the South, East, and lower Midwest. Meanwhile, showers and thunderstorms currently over the Midwest will reach the Mid-Atlantic States by mid-week. A separate area of rain will affect the western Gulf Coast region. Later, rain will spread from the Pacific Northwest to the upper Midwest. The NWS 6- to 10-day outlook for June 13-17 calls for near- to above-normal temperatures nationwide. Meanwhile, above-normal rainfall in the north-central U.S. will contrast with drier-than-normal conditions in the Northeast and from northern California into the Great Basin.
