According to an article in The Wichita Eagle, four dairy cooperatives are considering building a dairy processing plant southwest Kansas.

The cooperatives that have expressed interest in building a processing facility in the state include: Dairy Farmers of America, of Kansas City, Mo.; Select Milk Producers, of Artesia, N.M.; Lone Star Milk Producers, of Windthorst, Texas; and Zia Milk Producers, of Roswell, N.M. These four co-ops buy the majority of milk produced in the region. Building a plant in southwest Kansas would reduce transportation costs.

According to a spokesman for the Greater Southwest Agency, the marketing arm of the four cooperatives, a feasibility report is nearly done and a decision on where to place the new plant will probably be made in the first quarter of 2006. The group is also considering a location in Eastern Colorado.
