The Iowa House Agriculture Committee passed a bill earlier this week that would change the state’s winter manure spreading rules.
According to the Des Moines Register, the measure would exempt operations constructed before July 1, 2009, from having to construct or expand a manure storage structure to accommodate the law.
Predictably, this has certain groups upset. The newspaper reports that Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Executive Director Hugh Espey said, "House File 2324 will essentially allow 5,500 factory farms to dump manure in our water whenever they want. This bill is shameful, and CCI members are going to stop it dead in its tracks."
