Last week Wisconsin officials announced a new state wide Manure Task Force. The task force is a joint effort between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

The new task force was developed as a result of 30 “runoff incidents” that resulted in groundwater contamination in the state over the past year. The goal of the group is to try and determine the cause of the manure runoff – such as rainfall, lack of storage, over-application on land, or spreading on inappropriate land types – in order to prevent both ground- and surface-water contamination.

The task force will begin work right away and is expected to submit its findings by Dec. 15.
