A Washington County Circuit Court jury awarded Wisconsin dairy producers George and Kathy Muth $850,000 in damages for stray voltage at their dairy. The couple contends that the stray voltage led to lower milk production and an increase in animal deaths.

On an 11 to 1 vote, the jury decided that We Energies, formerly Wisconsin Electric Power Company, was negligent in the maintenance and operation of a distribution system the serves the Muth’s farm. During the trial, the electric company never denied that stray voltage existed. However, their belief, and that of several experts who testified, was that it was not enough to harm the cows.
