Everyone in the dairy industry knows that we rely on immigrant labor. A study commissioned by the National Milk Producers Federation has found that 40 percent of the U.S. dairy force is comprised of immigrants, although in some geographic areas the percentage is much higher than that.

Having a reliable source of immigrant laborers has been a blessing to many farmers, despite periodic enforcement efforts aimed at illegal aliens. The current economic recession has also made it easier for dairies to find workers and retain the ones they already have.

Yet, The Wall Street Journal has come out with an article suggesting that dairies are running low on labor.
