USDA wants to know your opinion on the proposed rule change for pasture and organic dairies.

The rule change specifies that organic dairy cows must spend at least 120 days per year on grass and that at least 30 percent of their feed must come from grazing during the pasture season. Comments are due by June 12. You can read the proposed rule change by following this link. The second page of the pdf document includes an e-mail link you can use to submit comments.

USDA has been gathering input on this topic for close to five years now. During this time the organic dairy industry has become somewhat polarized on this issue. An article at the Capital Press Agriculture Weekly, provides a lot of background to the debate. You can access that article by following this link.
