Looking at the heartland, an area hit by everything from tornadoes and floods to drought and dust storms over the last several months, corn conditions are mixed.

The worst of the crop resides in Kansas, with 10 percent of corn rated in poor or very condition.  Currently 83 percent of Kansas corn is growing in an area located within drought, compared to 27 percent in Colorado, 5 percent in Iowa and 6 percent in Missouri.

Struggling corn crops aren’t confined to the central Plains. Further to the north, both Nebraska and Minnesota are also reporting corn with higher reports of corn in poor or worse condition. Seven percent of both states are in these conditions.

Looking at soybeans, all but 5 percent have now been planted and 10 percent yet to emerge. Conditions also dipped slightly. This week 72 percent of soybeans are in great or better condition, compared to 73 percent reported last week.

Even though there was a slight decline, conditions are still well-above last year’s report of 65 percent.

For soybeans, the worst of the crop is located in the south. Louisiana reported the highest percentage (11 percent) of soybeans rated poor or very poor. Arkansas and Mississippi are also showing high numbers of struggling soybeans, with 9 percent in poor or worse condition.

Generally, the best soybeans have been reported in the northern tier of the country, including North Dakota and Wisconsin.
