Lancaster Co. Weekly Cattle Summary for week ending Friday, May 11, 2012
Cattle Calves
This Week: 2949 1115
Last Week: 2093 980
Last Year: 3288 1167
This week in Lancaster County, slaughter steers sold mostly steady in
comparison to last week. Whether the market has found a floor to this latest
downward trend is yet to be determined. Supplies have been light this past
week and demand moderate at best. Even though packing houses have begun to
report positive margins over the past couple of weeks their not very eager to
push the market higher after sustaining heavy losses in the first quarter of
the year. Packer`s strategy of reducing slaughter levels to raise box beef
prices and increase fat cattle supplies have finally experienced some
positive results. Cattle feeders are beginning to feel the pressure to move
cattle regardless of lower markets as front-end supplies become heavier. Once
these cattle reach a certain point it becomes of little benefit to continue
feeding. Cost of gains increase significantly and the risk of carcasses
taking a low yielding or heavy carcasses discount becomes higher with each
passing day. The reality that feedlots are becoming backlogged is upon us as
first quarter carcass weights reported by USDA hit a record high this year.
Dressed weights peaked at 792 lbs in early March, 2.7% higher than last year.
Steer slaughter has been down roughly 5% this year and heifer slaughter down
7%. The boxed beef market posted new highs early in the week, but trended
backwards late in the week to close roughly 1.00/cwt lower than last Friday`s
close. Choice cutout values were quoted at 189.10/cwt on Friday, with the
Choice/Select spread at 6.05/cwt. The cow market rallied higher this week,
advancing mostly 2.00-3.00 higher in most of the Lancaster region. Tight
supplies have heavily influenced demand, but the quickly approaching Memorial
Day holiday has also been an influence on the market. The last week in May
always tends to show some good seasonal demand for all meats due to the
Holiday as well as graduations and the ongoing enjoyment of the grilling
season. Cutter cow carcass values increased 0.36/cwt on Friday to close at
178.81, with 90% lean boneless at 228.93/cwt. All cattle markets are priced
per cwt with exception of dairy cattle purchased on a per head basis.
