Lancaster Weekly Cattle Summary for week ending Friday, October 05, 2012
Cattle Calves
This Week: 2028 1804
Last Week: 2508 2038
Last Year: 3195 1709
This week in Lancaster County slaughter steers sold mostly steady with a
small increase in the market early in the week. Demand has been light to
moderate with the market being propped up mostly by light supplies. Slaughter
cows across the region have maintained their value trading steady with
moderate to good demand. The boxed beef market has regained some of its value
from last Fridays sharp drop in value of over 3.00/cwt. As of Thursday Choice
cutout values were quoted at 191.35/cwt, with the Choice/Select spread at
14.26/cwt. Direct trades across the Midwest picked up a little on Thursday with
cattle selling steady with last week at 124.00. Cattle feeders were asking for
higher bids this week in hopes to decrease losses from the previous week.
Asking prices were at 125.00/cwt in Texas, packers were offering 121.00/cwt.
Wheat plantings continue to progress at a normal rate across the Midwest.
Cattle owners are counting on a good start to the crop to help ease grazing
pressure from both stocker calves and bred cows alike going into 2013.
Depending on the value of feeder cattle come spring, some of these fields
might be completely grazed out rather than harvested if the value of cattle
weight gain outweighs grain value. Corn Harvest is well underway and proceeding
at a faster rate than last year. As of this past Sunday, 94% of the crop is
matured with 54% harvested. In Pennsylvania 78% of the crop is matured with
18% harvested. Yields across the Midwest have varied to a great degree depending
on available moisture from this past summer. Many fields were simply plowed
under while others picked up sparse yields of 20-30 bu/acre. Fields that
received rain could range from 100-250 bu/acre depending on the location. In
southeastern Pennsylvania many areas are pushing good yields close to a 200/bu
average. Areas with marginal soil are pushing yields more in the range of 150
bu/acre. CME December corn futures closed at 7.57/bu on Thursday. Corn basis
have fallen across the region and are in the range of 20.00-35.00 cents above
the Chicago Board. All cattle markets are priced per cwt with exception of
dairy cattle purchased on a per head basis.
