Lancaster Weekly Cattle Summary for week ending Friday, December 07, 2012
Cattle Calves
This Week: 2753 1857
Last Week: 2648 2166
Last Year: 3178 1662
This week in Lancaster County slaughter steers traded steady to firm. A
lighter supply of cattle marketed this week helped promote demand and managed
to keep prices at elevated levels for another week. The Christmas season is
upon us, and typically in the beef industry this correlates to an increase in
demand for ribs and tenderloins. The increase in the Choice/Select spread
confirms the seasonal norm. The spread peaked just after the Thanksgiving
Holiday at 22.16/cwt and has remained remain above 20.00/cwt to date. The
spread is expected to soon contract as buying for the upcoming Holidays
quickly diminishes. Most of the cattle needed for the Christmas and New Year
Holiday orders have already been purchased and packers are likely to be less
aggressive in the coming weeks. The box beef market has pulled off a couple
dollar per cwt since it hit its seasonal high of 196.33/cwt two weeks ago. On
Thursday Choice cutouts were quoted at 194.13/cwt with the Choice/Select
spread at 20.44/cwt. Cull cow prices in the Lancaster region have maintained
a steady trade. Demand has been moderate and supplies were slightly off this
week. Agricultural commodity futures traded within a tight range this past
week. Speculative interest has been down with no fresh news on the
fundamental side and insecurities over congress and the "fiscal cliff"
keeping money on the sidelines in the outside markets. CME closes for
agricultural commodities as of Thursday are as follows: December Corn
7.475/bu; December Soybean Meal 458.00/ton; December Live Cattle 126.075/cwt;
January Feeder Cattle 148.25/cwt. All cattle markets are priced per cwt with
exception of dairy cattle purchased on a per head basis.
