California May Class 1 prices move back up

The California Department of Food & Agriculture announced the Class 1 price for the North at $25.88/cwt., with the South price at $26.15/cwt. Both are up $1.00 from April 2014, and $6.49 more than May 2013. Both are record highs.

Through the first five months of 2014, the North average Class 1 price is $24.42/cwt., up from $19.66/cwt. for the same period of 2013.

The January-May 2014 South average is $24.69/cwt., up from $19.93/cwt. for the same period a year ago.

The May federal order Class I base price will be announced April 23.

 

Weekly dairy cow slaughter under federal inspection

Week ending March 29: 57,700 head

Year-to-date (YTD) 2014: 767,600 head

YTD compared to same period 2013: -71,900 head

Highlights: For the week, 32% came from USDA Zone 5 (IL, IN, MI, MN, OH & WI); 25% came from USD Zone 9 (AZ, CA, HI & NV).

National Dairy Products Sales Report weekly highlights

USDA’s weekly National Dairy Products Sales Report indicated Grade AA butter prices averaged $1.97/lb. for the week ending April 9, up 7.2¢ from the previous week.
U.S. 40-lb. block cheddar cheese averaged $2.40/lb., up 5.4¢ from the previous week. The price for 500-lb. cheddar barrels, adjusted to 38% moisture, averaged $2.36/lb., up 3.7¢.

USDA Extra Grade dry whey averaged 67.1¢/lb., up 0.4¢.
USDA Extra Grade nonfat dry milk averaged $2.05/lb., down 2.1¢ from the previous week.

 

California NFDM prices

The weekly nonfat dry milk powder report has been posted to the California Department of Food & Agriculture Dairy Marketing Branch website.

For the week ending April 4, the average price was $2.0007/lb. on total sales of 16.24 million lbs.

For the week ending March 28, the average price was $2.0332/lb. on total sales of 17.64 million lbs.

IDFA, NMPF oppose efforts in California to allow raw milk sales

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) sent a joint letter to state Assembly members in California, urging them to oppose legislation that would remove existing regulations that prohibit the state-wide sale of raw milk to consumers.

The letter outlined the dangers associated with drinking unpasteurized milk and highlighted several prominent health organizations that oppose it, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

 

Newman's Own introduces Greek nonfat yogurt to Atlantic Seaboard

Newman’s Own introduced Newman’s Own Greek Nonfat Yogurt to markets along the Atlantic seaboard, from Maine to Maryland.

The five varieties include blueberry, pineapple, strawberry, peach and black cherry. The yogurt is available in a 5.3 oz. size and carries a suggested retail price of $1.49.

The following retailers carry Newman’s Own Greek Nonfat Yogurt in their dairy cases: Stop & Shop, Giant, Hannaford, Shaw’s, A&P, The Food Emporium, Pathmark, Waldbaum’s, Big Y and Price Chopper.

Kozy Shack names official ‘Grandma’

Land O’Lakes subsidiary Kozy Shack named its first “Official Grandma” — a one-of-a-kind representative who knows the simple goodness of pudding made right. Marilyn Cisek, a St. Paul, Minn. native now living in St. Petersburg, Fla., will appear in online and print advertising, online videos and the brand’s social media channels.

The Kozy Shack brand was born in 1967 in a neighborhood delicatessen serving homemade rice pudding. Since then, the brand has grown to become a major dessert manufacturer with distribution in the United States and Canada. Kozy Shack was acquired by Land O’Lakes, Inc., in 2012.
