April milk production rises 1.7 percent

Milk production in the 23 major milk-producing states totaled 15.5 billion pounds during April, up 1.7 percent from a year earlier, according to USDA’s Milk Production report released this afternoon.

Meanwhile, March revised production came in at 15.8 billion pounds, up 2.4 percent from March 2010. The March revision represented a decrease of 6 million pounds or less than 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,834 pounds for April, 9 pounds above April 2010. 

The national cow herd continues to build. According to the report, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.43 million head, 97,000 head more than April 2010, and 8,000 head more than last month.
