Illinois grains- Grain futures ended higher to sharply higher this week. Dry
weather concerns for both the central United States and China generated both
fund and commercial buying interest late in the week. Basis increases at both
processors and terminals ranged from 10 to 19 cents on corn and 3 to 16 cents
on soybeans. Sharp gains in the stock market were supportive to the grain
markets as well.
Illinois received some beneficial rainfall early in the week but a forecast of
just a slight chance of rain in the next 10 days is cause for concern. Statewide
54% of the topsoil moisture is in the short to very short category. According to
the USDA's Illinois Weather and Crops report, from the Illinois Field Office in
Springfield, the condition of the corn crop remained virtually the same as last
week, mainly due to lack of moisture. There was now 66% in good to excellent
condition, with 29% fair and 5% in very poor to poor condition. The soybean crop
condition report put the Illinois crop 60% in the good to excellent range, with
34% fair and 6% in the very poor to poor range. The wheat crop was 57% ripe,
compared to 1% for the five year average. Seven percent of the wheat crop has
been harvested.
The trading in the cash grain market was slow this week resulting in sharp basis
increases at both terminals and processors. At the Central Illinois Soybean
Processors cash bids ended 91 to 92 cents higher at 14.47-14.53; with basis 3 to
4 cents higher ranging from +19N to +25N. The Central Illinois Corn Processors
cash bids were 49 to 51 cents higher with bids ranging from 6.44-6.59, and basis
was 10 to 12 higher at +50N to +65N. At the Illinois River terminals south of
Peoria, cash corn bids ended 51 to 53 cents higher ranging from 6.31-6.36, with

cents at 14.45-14.49, with basis 11 to 16 cents higher ranging from +17N to +21N.
