The Cap Times reports a bill legalizing raw milk was rejected by Gov. Jim Doyle on the influence of the dairy industry.

The bill, already passed by the Senate (25-8) and the Assembly (60-35) was rejected at the last minute by Doyle, who insiders thought would pass the bill. Health concerns and the impact a viral outbreak would have on Wisconsin’s dairy and cheese industry were enough to squash the bill.

Raw milk supporters say there’s a double standard dairy farmers suffer when other raw items like sushi are allowed on the market. Supporters plan to reintroduce the bill at the next legislative session in January once a new governor is expected to take office.
