New York lawmakers are considering banning non-therapeutic antimicrobial usage in swine, cattle, poultry, sheep or any other animals raised for human food consumption, according to DVM 360.com. Senate Bill 80, pre-filed Dec. 10, 2010, would make the practice a misdemeanor.
Non-therapeutic uses outlined in the bill are not limited to growth promotion, feed efficiency or weight gain but also extends to routine disease prevention and other purposes in the absence of clinical signs of disease.
The action would also curb the use of non-therapeutic use of antimicrobials in animals raised to provide milk and eggs. No action is yet scheduled on the bill.
