In my opinion the results of this question will lead to misleading conclusions. Our economy is too strong to crash in 5 years; we are not Greece. That does not, however, diminish the crucial importance of this issue. Tom Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum in That Used to be Us call the deficit the Baby Boomers Greatest Generation moment. Not unlike WW II, getting ourselves out of the mess we have created by overspending on personal "wants" goods and underinvesting on our infrastructure for 20 years will require sacrifice by every America. Tom Friedman recently argued that America has a choice; we can have a bad decade or a horrific century.

Even though the debt is high, I don't believe the economy will crash, if only because I think the legislators won't allow that to happen. However, it is possible (and likely) that the debt will grow substantially. Tough decisions and choices are ahead for everyone if this nation is to get out of debt. It will not be easy, but it is necessary for this to remain the greatest country on Earth.

If we keep the current President the chances of a crash within the next 5 years greatly increases!

In this latest recession we have noticed that the malls are full, the restaurants are full, and the highways are full. Americans will continue to spend, spend, spend like fools. Most have not figured out that using credit cards at high interest rates are a personal dilemna waiting to happen. The Feds are no different. The day of reckoning is out there somewhere. If we all knew when, we could be prepared. Wait that sounds a little like Scripture doesn't it. I remain optimistic however. But not because of the politicians on both sides of the aisle. They are the dark cloud over us today.
