Did you agree with the House Agriculture Committee’s decision this week to include “supply management” in the dairy portion of the Farm Bill?
- Yes
- No
- Not sure
This supply management is a dream for a lobbyist and a nightmare for the taxpayer and real dairy farmer. But if you have a large highly leveraged dairy farm that is not economically viable, this will help you at the expense of dairy farmers that did not make unsound business decisions like borrowing as much money as possible to buy buildings and cows without having your own feed supply. The days of subsidized corn are over and these mega large farmers need the taxpayers and other dairy farmers to bail them out. I hope the processors hold this up in court and kill it. Unfortunately my cooperative will probably spend some of my money to defend it!
Not much of this makes sense. If a poorly run large dairy is going to benifit a well run farm with not much leverage will benefit all the more by putting the benefits in your pocket. The large dairy is not subsidized nearly like the smaller dairy.
my coop too is knee deep in promoting this monstrosity. I hope that saner minds will prevail. small farms will be the real loser in this farm bill.
