The Wisconsin Agriculturist reports the University of Wisconsin Extension will host workshops highlighting new ideas and practices used in dairy facility designs.

The workshops on December 16th and 17th will keep dairy producers updated on the changing facility designs. Workshops include concepts for new buildings and advice to improve productivity and cow comfort in existing structures.

Speakers and topics include:

• Mark Stephenson, UW-Madison/UW-Extension Director of Dairy policy, will give a milk price forecast and explain how future milk prices may affect production and expansion plans for farmers.

• Mike Ontrop and Scott Wetor, Orion's Agricultural Division, will focus on ways to reduce energy costs and improve productivity on the farm utilizing green technology.

• Rebecca Mentink, Outreach Specialist from the UW-School of Veterinary Medicine, will introduce the new Dairyland Initiative program.

• Doug Reinemann, UW-Madison/UW-Extension Milking Systems Specialist, will share research and observations of some new milking systems like rotary parlors and robotic milkers.

• Jim Stojke, Project Designer from Keller, Inc., will focus on the process of building on a farm.

One goal of this program is to facilitate construction of dairy cattle housing by bringing producers together with their teams of builders, lenders, and consultants. Taking some extra time at the beginning of the process to work with existing buildings, understanding local and state regulations, and planning for the long term future are all keys to a more successful building project.

Workshops will be held from 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in two locations. Both workshops will include the same presentations, so please make plans to attend the location most convenient for you:
