In the West, widespread rain and snow showers are affecting California, the Great Basin, and the Northwest. In parts of California and the Northwest, precipitation is hampering fieldwork but boosting high-elevation snow packs.

On the Plains, mild weather favors winter wheat development. Dry weather is aiding spring fieldwork operations across most of the region, although showers dot eastern Kansas and western South Dakota.

In the Corn Belt, mild, mostly dry weather continues to promote pre-planting fieldwork, despite a weak cold front’s passage. Isolated showers are occurring in the vicinity of the front in the Ohio and middle Mississippi Valleys.

In the South, warm, dry weather favors summer crop emergence and rapid winter wheat development. Planting activities are proceeding for crops such as corn, rice, and sorghum.

Outlook: A storm system crossing the West will reach the central Plains on Tuesday and the Great Lakes region by Thursday. Locally severe thunderstorms will accompany the system from parts of the Plains into the Mississippi Valley. By week’s end, rain associated with the storm could reach 1 to 3 inches from the central Plains into New England. Meanwhile, dry conditions and gusty winds will increase the threat of wildfires on the southern High Plains. The NWS 6- to 10-day outlook for April 10-14 calls for above-normal temperatures across the central one-third of the U.S., while cooler-than-normal weather will prevail in southern Florida and the West. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation in northern California and across the nation’s southern tier will contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions in the Northwest and the upper Great Lakes region.
