Proper dehorning procedures can significantly reduce the stress of dehorning on calves.

According to Amy Stanton, University of Wisconsin-Madison dairy science assistant professor and animal wellbeing specialist, the top goal for dehorning should be to do it early in the calf’s life. 

Calf raisers have several strategies to choose from based on their management preferences and facilities. Stanton goes into the options in the February 2013 issue of Starting Strong. She also discusses proper calf restraint and pain-management options for disbudding (using a hot iron) and caustic paste.
