It’s often said that alfalfa is the “queen” and corn silage the “king” of forages, based on their widespread use and importance in dairy rations, says Rick Grant, president of the W.H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute in Chazy, N.Y.
A crowning achievement of both crops is the highly digestible fiber they bring to dairy cattle diets.
In the April 2012 Miner Institute Farm Report, Grant discusses some exciting advances that enhance the fiber digestibility and nutritional quality of alfalfa and corn silage.
"...we are on the threshold of dramatic improvements in the nutritional value of our major forage crops," Grant says.
