Dairy worker killed in skid loader accident

An accident at Turner County Dairy near Parker, S.D., left one worker dead.

According to KDLT News, the 21-year-old farm worker died Friday while operating a skid loader. The man was working alone at the time.

Even so, the Argus Leader reports authorities suspect he may have been attempting to get out of the skid steer when the loader pinned him.

"We don't know exactly how that could have happened, but it did," Byron Nogermeier, sheriff of Turner County said. "All the safety features of the skid steer loader were working properly. We are trying to figure it out. It went down somehow, pinning him under the arms of the loader and inside the cab of the skid steer."

Co-owner Walt Bones told reporters the accident occurred at an “exceptionally busy time in agriculture.”

"This just underscores we need to be thinking safety," he said. "Especially this time of year for farmers, it's time to go go go. Sometimes we do ... things under the guise of trying to save time or get more done. We have no idea what was going on there. It's just a general message to
