A new article entitled, “The Importance of Knowing Dry Matter Concentration When Buying (or Selling) Feeds,” has been published as an Ohio State University Dairy Issue Briefs (DIBS # 28-13).

The article looks at why dry matter concentration must be considered when buying or selling feeds and provides steps to follow when pricing wet feeds. Feed sampling advice also is given.

"Water in feeds dilutes nutrients that have economic value," explains Bill Weiss, professor and extension dairy specialist, The Ohio State University. "Adjusting for the water concentration in feeds will help price them more accurately which will ultimately improve the bottom line for both buyers and sellers."
