Recent research has shown that oats, seeded in late-summer, can provide an excellent source of emergency forage before winter.

This is the subject of two new University of Wisconsin “Focus on Forage” fact sheets: “Fall-Grown Oat Forages: Unique Quality Characteristics” and “Fall-Grown Oat Forages: Cultivars, Planting Dates, and Expected Yields.”

The fact sheets were written by Wayne Coblentz, scientist with the USDA Dairy Forage Research Center, and Mike Bertram, Arlington ARS Superintendent.
