Research examines solids separators

Manure solids separators are common on dairies to remove large particle solids prior to storage of manure in lagoons, but limited information is available to document the performance of different types of separators.

“From 2009 to 2012 we had the opportunity to monitor two types of separators, a screw press and a rotating drum with roller press, for their ability to partition solids and nutrients,” say Joe Harrison, Washington State University livestock nutrient management specialist, and Liz Whitefield, program manager.

In the December 2012 Washington State University Dairy Newsletter, Harrison and Whitefield provide a brief look at the efficiency of the two types of separators.
