Get electrolyte dosing right

Determining how much and how often electrolyte solution should be fed to scouring calves is a frustrating challenge for many calf raisers.  

Rob Costello, Dairy Technical/Business Support Manager for Milk Specialties Global, Fond du Lac, Wis., acknowledges that electrolyte product labels and feeding instructions can be confusing.

“The most important thing to remember is that sick calves need extra fluids and a steady supply of nutrients to recover,” he advises. “So don’t withhold milk feedings during the treatment period, but be sure to separately feed electrolytes solutions -- reconstituted with water only -- to replenish fluid loss.”
