Springer heifer prices were firm at most recent auctions. Top quality heifers topped out at $1,925 in Turlock, Calif., and $1,900 in New Holland, Pa. Demand for heifers remains strong. Dairy producers continue to cull at a high rate, but they are replacing those animals with heifers and the U.S. dairy herd continues to grow. However, calf prices were a little lower at the latest auctions, topping out at $225 in Stratford, Wis., compared to $320 last month, reports Greg Scheer, dairy analyst with Doane Advisory Services in St. Louis, Mo.
