Successfully heat-treating colostrum requires adherence to strict protocols, according to University of Minnesota researchers led by Sandra Godden.  To avoid excessive IgG loss while preventing extreme thickening, they advise:

  • Control temperature precisely.
  • Prevent temperature from fluctuating more than 1°C above the target of 60°C.
  • Heat and cool colostrum rapidly and actively before and after the holding phase of 60°C for 60 minutes.
  • Constantly agitate colostrum during the heating up, holding and cooling down phases of the process.
